Police rescue 14 abducted victims in Benue Links Bus attack as Driver, Two Others die
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of 14 passengers abducted during a deadly attack on a Benue Links transport vehicle along the Otukpo highway.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Sewuese Catherine Anene, the attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. on April 3, 2025, when a Toyota Hiace bus conveying passengers from Makurdi to Otukpo was ambushed by armed kidnappers near the Otukpo Burnt Bricks area.
The assailants reportedly opened fire on the driver and a front-seat passenger, forcing the vehicle to stop. Both victims sustained gunshot wounds and were later confirmed dead at the hospital.
Following swift intervention by police operatives and the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, a search operation was launched in nearby forests. On April 4, the rescue team encountered the kidnappers and engaged them in a fierce gun battle, which led to the bandits fleeing and abandoning their captives.
During the operation, 14 kidnapped victims were rescued, although one of them later died from machete injuries inflicted by the assailants. The remaining victims are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.
The Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Steve H. Yabanet, extended condolences to the families of the three deceased victims and assured that the command is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
He also urged residents of Otukpo and surrounding areas to report anyone with gunshot wounds, noting that several bandits were injured during the exchange of fire.
