Sanwo-Olu reaffirms Lagos’ commitment to sustainable growth ahead of COP30
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to promoting sustainable growth through innovation and investment in resilience as the state prepares to host the 2025 International Climate Change Summit.
The summit, themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation”, is scheduled to take place in Lagos from November 6 to 7, 2025. It is expected to draw global leaders, investors, climate scientists, and policymakers from across the world.
According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the Governor noted that Lagos continues to lead in subnational climate action by developing practical strategies for city-level climate financing.
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the state’s efforts in creating blue bonds and nature-based coastal protection projects, describing them as key components shaping Africa’s next decade of sustainable urban growth.
Speaking ahead of the event, Wahab said, “The Lagos International Climate Change Summit 2025 is more than a conference; it is a declaration that African cities can finance their own future.”
The summit aims to accelerate investment and action in Africa’s coastal and ocean economies in the build-up to the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
Now in its 11th edition, the Lagos Climate Change Summit will serve as a strategic platform for global and African stakeholders to align climate priorities, foster partnerships, and amplify Africa’s influence in international climate negotiations.
Key discussions will focus on blue economy financing as a catalyst for adaptation, innovation, and job creation across the continent. The summit will explore opportunities for investment in ocean energy, sustainable fisheries, mangrove restoration, and coastal infrastructure through green and blended finance models.
It will also feature highlights of ongoing and upcoming projects promoting coastal resilience, environmental innovation, and sustainable livelihoods within Lagos State.
Delegates expected at the summit include representatives from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the World Bank, and Eko Atlantic, among other major stakeholders.
