Senate President Akpabio endorses creation of Anioma State, names Warri as capital
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed both legislative and political support for the creation of Anioma state.
Speaking on Wednesday at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress in Asaba, Delta State, Akpabio said the President Bola Tinubu administration remains committed to the initiative. He disclosed that Warri would serve as the capital of the new Delta state if Anioma is created.
Highlighting Warri’s existing infrastructure, he noted the city has an airport, government offices, major oil companies, a seaport, and a stadium. The event drew governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders from the region.
Akpabio described the push for Anioma state as historically justified, rooted in equity, administrative efficiency, and balanced development. He praised for championing the initiative, which continues to receive legislative attention.
He emphasised that the 10th Senate prioritises the proposal, which would split Delta State into two viable entities, promoting decentralisation and socio-economic growth.
“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio said. “This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity. With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
He also called for unity among South-South residents and urged support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration to foster sustainable growth and national integration.
In November 2025, Nwoko announced that the bid to create Anioma state had gained momentum, with backing from constitutional amendment committees and the Tinubu administration. He noted that 97 senators had endorsed the move, marking unprecedented support for the initiative.
