Super Eagles cruise past Gabon 4-1 to reach CAF playoff final
Nigeria advanced to the CAF playoff final after a thrilling 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Rabat on Thursday, setting up a decisive clash against the winner between DR Congo and Cameroon for a place in the intercontinental playoff.
The game remained goalless until the 78th minute when Akor Adams capitalised on a defensive blunder to put the Super Eagles ahead. Gabon, however, fought back late, with Mario Lemina’s deflected strike in the 89th minute forcing extra time after a tense 1-1 draw in regulation.
Extra time belonged to Nigeria.
Chidera Ejuke restored the lead in the 97th minute after a neat assist from Wilfred Ndidi. Victor Osimhen then took centre stage, netting twice within eight minutes, a precise angled finish in the 102nd minute and another composed strike in the 110th, to seal a commanding 4-1 win.
Coach Éric Chelle made key substitutions to keep control of the match, including Onyeka replacing Adams in the 83rd minute, and Awaziem and Ekong coming on in the 108th to fortify the defence.
Despite Gabon’s attempts to respond, Nigeria’s backline held firm until the final whistle.
With the victory, the Super Eagles move one step closer to a 2026 FIFA World Cup berth, awaiting the outcome of the DR Congo versus Cameroon fixture to determine their next opponent in the CAF playoff final.
