NFF celebrates Troost-Ekong as Super Eagles captain bows out after decade of dervice

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has paid a glowing tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, celebrating him as a “committed and humble leader” following his announcement of retirement from international football.

Troost-Ekong, who revealed his decision via his official X (Twitter) handle on Thursday, expressed gratitude to Nigerian fans, teammates and coaches for their unwavering support throughout his decade-long journey with the national team. The defender, who featured for Watford, Olympiakos and PAOK, described representing Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and several AFCON tournaments as one of the greatest honours of his professional career.

In a statement on Friday, NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, said the federation received the news with pride and appreciation for the defender’s exemplary service. “Ekong gave everything to the Super Eagles,” Olajire said. “He led with passion, calmness and responsibility, and he served Nigeria with outstanding patriotism.”

He noted that even before Ekong assumed the captaincy, he had always embodied discipline, ambition and total devotion to the green-white-green jersey. “He was a model professional and a leader younger players should emulate,” the spokesperson added.

Olajire highlighted Ekong’s impressive contributions at the 2019, 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, describing his leadership and defensive presence as instrumental to Nigeria’s bronze and silver medal achievements. “His AFCON 2023 exploits—including three crucial goals and the MVP award—will remain unforgettable,” he said.

With 83 caps, multiple World Cup appearances and decisive tournament goals, Ekong bows out as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished defenders in the modern era. “He leaves fulfilled, respected and forever part of our football story,” Olajire stated.

The NFF wished the former captain success in his future endeavours and assured him of the federation’s continued support. “We wish him the very best and will always stand by him,” Olajire affirmed.

Troost-Ekong, who made his international debut under Coach Sunday Oliseh in 2015, rose from promising squad member to vice-captain before eventually becoming the team’s leader. He retires as one of Nigeria’s most capped defenders and one of the few Nigerians ever named AFCON Most Valuable Player.
