Labour Party Crisis: Gov. Otti, Peter Obi, Others meet INEC Over Leadership issues

In a bid to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP), a high-powered delegation led by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday.
The delegation included the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; the Acting National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman; Edo governorship candidate Olumide Akpata; and several National Assembly members.
According to a statement released via INEC’s official X handle, the meeting focused on recent developments following the Supreme Court judgment that nullified the leadership of the Julius Abure-led National Executive Committee.
During the engagement, Governor Otti presented a Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment to the Commission. He explained that the visit was aimed at promoting clarity and understanding regarding the current leadership structure of the party, while aligning institutional roles in accordance with the rule of law.
The INEC team, led by Acting Chairman Sam Olumekun in the absence of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu—who is attending an ECOWAS electoral commission meeting in The Gambia—received the Labour Party delegation and welcomed the dialogue.
Mr. Olumekun reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to neutrality, transparency, and constitutional governance, stating that the Commission remains focused on upholding democratic principles in all its dealings.
The meeting marks a significant step toward resolving internal party disputes and ensuring a unified Labour Party ahead of future political contests.
