NAWOJ President Onyilo honoured with Distinguished Leadership Award for Championing Women in Journalism
The former National President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Evelyn Onyilo, has been honoured with the Distinguished Service and Leadership Award in Abuja, recognising her remarkable contributions to the advancement of women in journalism during her tenure from 2002 to 2004.
The award, presented by the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, also celebrated other past leaders of the union for their dedication and service.
Evelyn Onyilo, who led NAWOJ at a period when women in the media battled significant challenges such as gender bias, underrepresentation in leadership roles, and restricted access to career development opportunities, was praised for her courage, integrity, and inclusive leadership style. During her time in office, she expanded NAWOJ’s presence across Nigeria, encouraging stronger unity between state chapters and enhancing the association’s standing in both the media industry and policy circles.
Her leadership saw the introduction of national training programs specially designed for female journalists, active advocacy on gender-related issues within the media, and unwavering campaigns for press freedom and the safety of journalists. Evelyn also secured NAWOJ’s legal status and broadened its participation in international media forums, ensuring Nigerian female journalists had a seat at the global table.
After her term, Evelyn Onyilo went on in 2015 to establish the Initiative for Women’s Accelerated Development In Africa (INWOAD), an NGO dedicated to mobilising women for national development and advocating against all forms of discrimination against women and girls.
The Distinguished Service and Leadership Award not only celebrates her achievements during her tenure but also acknowledges the enduring impact of her reforms on NAWOJ and journalism in Nigeria. Her initiatives laid a solid foundation for mentorship, professional ethics, and solidarity among women journalists, values that continue to drive the association today.
INWOAD, through its National Coordinator Lydia Samson, described the award as a well-earned recognition for a leader who has tirelessly championed gender equity, journalistic integrity, and institutional growth. The group also extended gratitude to the NUJ leadership for recognising Evelyn Onyilo’s invaluable service.
This award stands as a reminder of the lasting importance of visionary leadership and the need to honour women whose sacrifices and dedication have shaped the Nigerian media space for future generations.
