BREAKING: Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam resigns amid impeachment move
The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned.
This was disclosed on Friday in a statement issued by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier initiated impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor.
However, a Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Wednesday declined an application by Abdussalam seeking to halt the process.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement said.
It added that the decision, though difficult, was taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in the state.
“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor. In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve,” the statement said.
The movement clarified that the resignation does not amount to an admission of the allegations raised against him by the state assembly.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly. The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,” it stated.
It further described the move as an act of statesmanship aimed at preserving peace and avoiding political tension that could hinder governance and development in the state.
The statement also noted that Abdussalam would now focus on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The Deputy Governor has also resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” it added.
The movement urged its supporters and residents of Kano State to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to the ideals of good governance and democracy, assuring that further details would be communicated in due course.
The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office following mounting political pressure and impeachment proceedings initiated by the State House of Assembly.
The development was announced on Friday in a statement issued by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
The resignation comes shortly after a Federal High Court in Kano declined Abdussalam’s application to halt the impeachment process, effectively clearing the way for the legislature to proceed.
According to the statement, the decision to step down was taken in the interest of maintaining stability and ensuring effective governance in the state. It noted that recent developments had significantly constrained the deputy governor’s ability to fully discharge his responsibilities.
The movement, however, stressed that Abdussalam’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, maintaining that he remains innocent of the allegations levelled against him by the assembly.
Describing the move as an act of statesmanship, the statement said it was aimed at preserving peace and preventing political tension that could disrupt governance and development in Kano State.
It further revealed that Abdussalam would now focus on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in preparation for political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters and residents of the state were urged to remain calm and law-abiding, as the movement assured that further updates would be communicated in due course.
