BREAKING: Tinubu seeks Senate approval for troop deployment to Benin Republic
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a regional peace-support mission.
The request, conveyed to the upper chamber on Tuesday, follows an appeal by President Patrice Talon after the recent failed coup attempt in his country.
In his letter, President Tinubu explained that the deployment is intended to strengthen stability and provide the necessary backing to Benin’s authorities in line with regional security commitments.
The move aligns with established protocols of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which mandates member states to assist countries facing unconstitutional changes of government. Nigeria had earlier provided air support in response to the breach, underscoring its role as a key pillar in the region’s peace and security architecture.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the President’s request before giving its approval.
