Court orders remand of Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, in Kuje Prison
A magistrate court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Aloy Ejimakor, one of the legal representatives of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Ejimakor was arrested by police in Abuja on Monday after participating in a protest demanding Kanu’s release. The IPOB leader has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021.
Ejimakor, along with 12 others, was charged with multiple offences, including criminal conspiracy, disobedience of a lawful order, inciting disturbance, and breach of public peace, in violation of sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code Law.
The defendants listed in two separate first information reports (FIRs) include Emmanuel Kanu, Joshua Emmanuel, Wilson Anyalewechi, Okere Kingdom Nnamdi, Clinton Chimeneze, Gabriel Joshua, Isiaka Husseini, Onyekachi Ferdinand, Amadi Prince, Edison Ojisom, Godwill Obioma, and Chima Onuchukwu.
According to the police, the group was arrested at various locations across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while allegedly engaging in activities that disrupted public order and peace. The FIR stated that they blocked traffic, chanted war songs, and called for Kanu’s release in defiance of a court order.
The second FIR noted that one of the defendants, Chima Onuchukwu, was arrested at Gate 8, Aso Villa, carrying placards reading “Free Nnamdi Kanu,” and accused of inciting public disturbance.
When the suspects were brought before the Kuje magistrate court, their arraignment could not proceed as they requested time to consult their lawyers. The magistrate later ordered their remand in Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the case until October 24 for arraignment.
In a post on X, Ejimakor confirmed his detention, saying, “I am safe & sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The magistrate refused to listen to our submissions. He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way. For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje.”
Earlier on Monday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, had called for disciplinary action against Ejimakor over alleged professional misconduct.
