FG closes case against Nnamdi Kanu
The Federal Government has formally closed its case in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), over allegations bordering on terrorism and treason.
Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, who represents the government, announced this decision on Thursday after the fifth prosecution witness, identified simply as EEE for security reasons, completed his testimony at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The witness was also cross-examined by Kanu’s lead lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu.
According to Awomolo, the government is satisfied with the evidence presented so far in court, including a series of broadcast recordings said to be linked to the IPOB leader. He expressed confidence that the evidence was enough to conclude the prosecution’s argument.
“With the testimony of the fifth witness and evidence before this honourable court, we have established our case, and I therefore close the case,” Awomolo declared.
Following this, the lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, notified the court of their intention to file a no-case submission, a legal application challenging the sufficiency of the evidence presented by the prosecution to warrant a continuation of the trial. He stated that the necessary documents would be submitted in due course.
Justice James Omotosho presided over the proceedings.
