Gov Abba Yusuf deploys 1,600 Watchmen, recruits 400 Maths Teachers to boost school security, learning
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has deployed no fewer than 1,600 watchmen to enhance security across secondary schools in the state.
The move comes just hours after the deadly attack on a government girls’ school in the Maga community of Kebbi State, where the vice principal was killed and 25 students were abducted.
Speaking during the distribution of permanent and pensionable appointment letters to the new watchmen and 400 mathematics teachers, Governor Yusuf said the safety of students, teachers and school facilities remains a top priority of his administration, stressing that no learning environment can thrive without security.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the governor said the deployment marks a major step toward restoring safety, discipline and stability in public schools. He explained that the watchmen will serve as frontline protectors of school premises, monitor unauthorised activities and support the smooth running of academic activities.
He urged them to carry out their duties with vigilance, discipline and integrity.
Governor Yusuf also explained that the recruitment of 400 mathematics teachers is aimed at addressing subject gaps that affect students’ performance and career readiness. He noted that mathematics is the foundation of science, technology, engineering and innovation, adding that Kano must strengthen its base to remain competitive in a knowledge-driven world.
He said the new teachers will help improve teaching quality, boost examination outcomes and support students seeking careers in STEM fields.
The governor commended the Ministry of Education and the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board (KSSSSMB) for conducting a transparent recruitment process. He encouraged the new teachers to teach with passion and professionalism, urging them to justify the confidence placed in them.
