Kwara State unveils Tallest Flagpole in West Africa
The Kwara State Government has officially unveiled a 70-metre-high flagpole, now recognised as the tallest in West Africa.
The monumental structure, which proudly displays the Nigerian flag, was inaugurated on Friday and lauded as a powerful symbol of identity, unity, and pride for the state.
In an official statement, the State Commissioner for Works, Abdulquawiy Olododo, described the flagpole as more than just a landmark. He highlighted its cultural, economic, and social importance, noting that it represents the vibrant spirit and diversity of the Kwara people.
“Flagpoles have long served as symbols of national pride. This particular landmark goes beyond symbolism, embodying the rich heritage, values, and traditions of a people renowned for harmonious coexistence,” Olododo stated.
He noted that the towering flagpole aligns with Kwara’s evolving image as a hub for technology, hospitality, tourism, trade, agribusiness, and the creative economy, moving away from its traditional perception as a state reliant on civil service.
According to the commissioner, the newly commissioned flagpole serves as a beacon of Kwara’s modern aspirations while paying homage to its traditional roots. It is expected to attract tourists, boost local businesses, and stimulate further investment in the state’s economy.
“This flag represents not just the sovereignty of our nation, but the collective spirit and unity of all groups in Kwara. It symbolises growth, progress, and the vision of a brighter, prosperous future driven by innovation and strategic development,” Olododo remarked.

He further urged Kwarans to reflect on their individual roles in the state’s progress and to support sustainable initiatives that preserve cultural heritage while fostering modern development.
