Liverpool crush Tottenham 5-1 to clinch record-equalling 20th English Title
Liverpool delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at a jubilant Anfield to secure the Premier League title and match Manchester United’s record of 20 English top-flight championships.
Under the guidance of Arne Slot, Liverpool recovered from an early setback to take complete control of the match in front of over 60,000 enthusiastic fans. The victory means they are now beyond the reach of second-placed Arsenal, officially sealing the trophy.
The home crowd, buoyed by a rousing rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in the spring sunshine, watched as Liverpool pressed forward from the start. Though Tottenham briefly stunned Anfield when Dominic Solanke headed home a James Maddison corner in the 12th minute, the lead didn’t last.
Just four minutes later, Luis Diaz turned in Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross, with VAR overturning an initial offside decision. From there, Liverpool took charge. Alexis Mac Allister fired in a powerful effort from the edge of the box to make it 2-1, and Cody Gakpo increased the lead after a defensive mix-up.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, focusing on the Europa League semi-finals, made eight changes to his starting line-up, leaving his team struggling to cope. In the second half, top scorer Mohamed Salah got the fourth goal Liverpool fans were craving, cutting inside and finishing into the bottom corner before taking a celebratory selfie with a fan in front of the famous Kop end.
An own goal from Destiny Udogie later sealed Tottenham’s miserable evening, as Liverpool supporters erupted into chants of “We’re going to win the league” and “We shall not be moved.” At the final whistle, Anfield erupted in celebration, with scarves raised high and voices singing the club’s anthem once more.
The triumph lifts Liverpool to 82 points, 15 clear of Arsenal with only four games left, while Tottenham languish in 16th after suffering their 19th defeat of a disappointing season.
Pre-match, the Anfield surroundings were alive with fans, flares, and merchandise stalls selling scarves proclaiming Liverpool as “20-time Champions.” While Manchester City started the season as favourites to defend their crown, poor form saw them falter, and Arsenal couldn’t fully capitalise.
Despite the pressure of replacing Jurgen Klopp last summer, Slot has guided Liverpool through a superb campaign, even with ongoing speculation around Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Both Salah and Van Dijk have now extended their contracts, though reports suggest Alexander-Arnold could be on his way to Real Madrid.
This title win not only confirms Liverpool’s dominance this season but also places them alongside Manchester United as the joint-most successful club in English league history.
