BREAKING: INEC declines recognition of Turaki-Led PDP leadership, cites court order

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a request to recognise the national working committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki, citing existing court judgements.

The electoral umpire said its decision was based on multiple judicial rulings affecting the leadership structure of the opposition party.

Although details of the specific court judgements were not immediately disclosed, INEC maintained that it is bound by law to act strictly in line with subsisting court decisions when dealing with internal party disputes.

The Turaki-led PDP NWC enjoys the backing of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, both of whom have been vocal about the need for internal reforms within the party.

The rejection by INEC represents a fresh setback for the faction, coming amid an ongoing leadership crisis that has continued to polarise the PDP at the national level.

Political observers say the development may further deepen divisions within the party as it struggles to present a united front ahead of future electoral contests.

INEC is expected to issue more details on the decision as events unfold.
