FCT elections: Wike declares Friday a work-free day
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day to enable residents participate in the forthcoming Area Council elections.
In a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday, the Minister urged residents to come out en masse on Saturday, February 21, to elect chairmen and councillors across the six Area Councils of the FCT.
He emphasised that the elections present a crucial opportunity for residents to shape the future of the territory and called for orderly and peaceful participation.
“As we exercise our democratic right, let us do so in an orderly and lawful manner. Let us respect the rules, respect each other, and respect the outcome of the election,” he said.
Movement Restriction Announced
The Minister disclosed that with the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, movement within the FCT will be restricted from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
He directed all security agencies to ensure strict compliance with the order.
Wike also appreciated the President for signing the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 into law, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and ensuring credible elections.
Call for Peaceful Participation
The Minister urged residents to approach the polls with a sense of purpose and responsibility, stressing that democracy remains a work in progress that improves through continuous reforms and civic engagement.
“Our prayer, as an administration, is that the elections will facilitate the emergence of such quality leaders that will contribute meaningfully to development, peace and prosperity in the FCT,” he stated.
He concluded by encouraging all eligible voters to make their voices heard and participate actively in the electoral process.
