First Lady donates N1bn, approves healthcare center to combat TB in FCT

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has made a donation of N1 billion and approved the establishment of a healthcare center to fight against tuberculosis in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This is just as the First Lady has instructed the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, to facilitate the establishment of a Primary Healthcare Centre in Sauka Village, under the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

This initiative, endorsed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, aims to enhance healthcare services and strengthen tuberculosis (TB) control in the community.

Senator Remi Tinubu, who also serves as the Global and National Stop TB Champion, issued the directive during the 2025 World Tuberculosis Day commemoration in Sauka.

The First Lady stressed the importance of grassroots interventions in tackling TB and explained that this year’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” was locally translated as “We Fit Run Am” to foster better engagement with the community.

“To support the fight against this communicable disease, I will not only donate ₦1 billion, but I also approve the request for the establishment of a Primary Healthcare Centre in Sauka Community,” she announced.

She added that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for an efficient healthcare system and noted that Dr Fasawe would oversee its implementation with the backing of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Mrs Tinubu further stated that the new facility would serve as a hub for TB detection, treatment, and general healthcare services, ensuring residents receive timely and high-quality medical care.

Despite being both preventable and treatable, TB remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with the country ranking among those with the highest TB burden globally. This highlights the urgent need for improved healthcare services and stronger community-based interventions.

The Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, commended the First Lady for her dedication to eradicating TB.

“The establishment of the new Primary Healthcare Centre in Sauka marks a significant step towards enhancing healthcare services, improving TB control, and ensuring accessible healthcare for all in the FCT,” she stated.

She also praised the dedication of FCT healthcare workers, whose efforts have significantly strengthened the health system.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media (HSES), Bola Ajao, noted that the event was organised by the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Stop TB Partnership Nigeria, the World Health Organization, and other development partners.

The event featured free TB testing for attendees.
