Gov Bago, EFKO Group discuss Sunflower Oil, Agro-Investment prospects in Russia
Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has opened discussions with representatives of EFKO Group, a leading agro-industrial firm in Russia, as part of efforts to attract strategic agricultural and food processing investments to the state.
During the meeting, Governor Bago and officials from EFKO explored possible areas of collaboration, with a major focus on sunflower oil production. EFKO is a major player in Russia’s vegetable oil market, known for popular brands like Sloboda and Altero, and is also a significant producer of specialized fats used in food production, baking, and confectionery.
Given Russia’s status as one of the world’s top producers of sunflower oil, alongside countries like Ukraine and Argentina, EFKO is looking to expand its sourcing partnerships globally. Niger State’s vast agricultural resources were identified as a potential avenue for integrating contract farming systems for sunflower cultivation, a model already in use by companies like Bidco Africa in East Africa.
Beyond sunflower oil, the talks also touched on opportunities in other food processing sectors. EFKO’s range of products includes margarine, mayonnaise, sauces, pasta, rice, and cookies. Discussions extended to areas like investment, technology transfer, and the possibility of forming public-private partnerships to advance Niger State’s agricultural value chain.
Governor Bago expressed optimism about the economic benefits such a partnership could bring, including job creation, economic diversification, and the development of the state’s agricultural potential. He noted that introducing contract farming could empower local farmers, while EFKO’s expertise might boost farming techniques and modernize food processing operations within the state.
Both parties agreed to carry out feasibility studies to assess the suitability of Niger State’s land for large-scale sunflower farming.
Further discussions are expected to cover contract agreements and plans for infrastructure development such as processing plants and storage facilities to support future operations.
