China reaffirms strong backing for Nigeria’s security, economic reforms

China has renewed its pledge to support Nigeria’s security architecture and ongoing economic reforms, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors.

This assurance was given by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, during a high-level meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy on Wednesday, Yu described the China–Nigeria comprehensive strategic partnership as one that has “entered the fast track”, driven by deep political trust and expanding cooperation.

He noted that the recently released Recommendations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China for the formulation of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan reflect Beijing’s resolve to expand high-standard opening-up and share development opportunities with partners worldwide, including Nigeria.

Yu stressed that both nations have always supported each other on issues central to their national interests, adding that China remains committed to assisting Nigeria in combating terrorism, strengthening security, and enhancing peacebuilding efforts.

He also reiterated China’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria in implementing a zero-tariff regime for more Nigerian exports, while also preparing for activities marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, which coincides with the China-Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges.

“These efforts will further consolidate strategic mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and deliver greater benefits to the peoples of both nations,” the ambassador said.

Responding, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s adherence to the one-China principle and described China as a comprehensive strategic partner.

Tuggar commended Beijing’s consistent support for Nigeria’s economic and social development and expressed the government’s readiness to deepen cooperation in manufacturing, trade, investment, and development strategy alignment.

He noted that strengthening the partnership would help both countries unlock greater opportunities for growth and stability.
