Wilfred Ndidi named new Super Eagles captain ahead of AFCON 2025
Wilfred Ndidi has been officially appointed the new captain of the Super Eagles on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder and vice-captain at Besiktas assumes the leadership role following the retirements of former captains William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa. Ndidi was named captain on Friday after Nigeria’s arrival in Morocco for the tournament and the team’s first training session.
Speaking to the team’s media, Ndidi said he had consulted senior squad members and sought the support of all staff to ensure a smooth transition.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said. “With the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly. I’ve had conversations with some of the older players to explain our mission. We also need support from the staff—we’re all in this together.”
Reflecting on missing out on the 2026 World Cup, Ndidi said AFCON offers a chance for redemption. “It was a sad one missing out on the World Cup, but this is another opportunity to correct the wrongs, put smiles on Nigerians’ faces, and make the country proud once again,” he said.
Ndidi will captain Nigeria in their opening group match against Tanzania on December 23.
