Acting IGP Disu declares end to Police impunity, seeks public trust
Newly decorated Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has declared that the “era of impunity is over” in the Nigeria Police Force, promising strict discipline, respect for human rights and zero tolerance for corruption under his leadership.
Disu spoke with State House correspondents in Abuja on Wednesday shortly after being decorated by Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Acting Inspector-General of Police.
“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over,” Disu said, referring to officers and men of the Force.
“I will ensure that I train them and encourage them to follow human rights. I will ensure that they know that I will try to follow a regime of zero tolerance to corruption,” he added.
The acting police chief said professionalism and public trust would form the foundation of his leadership, stressing that rebuilding confidence between citizens and the police would be a top priority.
According to him, one of his first engagements with officers would focus on redefining the relationship between the police and the public.
“One of the first lectures I’m going to have with my men, I’m going to talk to them, let them know that the citizen of the country is the boss,” he said.
He noted that effective policing depends on cooperation from the public, adding that intelligence gathering and crime prevention require strong community partnerships.
Disu also reflected on his decoration ceremony, saying he was emotionally touched when the President highlighted his past achievements in various commands across the country.
“The President mentioning areas I’ve worked and successes I’ve recorded as a policeman brought emotion to me, almost brought me to tears,” he said.
He described the President’s remarks as both recognition and a challenge to deliver improved security and stability nationwide.
Beyond discipline and accountability, Disu pledged to prioritise the welfare of officers, noting that improved motivation would enhance performance and service delivery.
“I’m going to ensure that I take their welfare into consideration, because people who are motivated put in their best,” he said.
The acting IGP expressed confidence in the capacity of police officers to tackle the country’s security challenges, describing them as hardworking and committed personnel whose morale would be strengthened under his leadership.
