13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament Kicks Off in Abuja

The 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament (TOLAC) commenced on March 6, 2025, at the Velodrome, MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, drawing athletes from 11 ECOWAS Member States.

The tournament, which is part of ECOWAS’ 50th Anniversary Celebrations, marks a historic moment as female wrestlers compete for the first time. The competition, running until March 8, offers cash prizes of up to $10,000, highlighting ECOWAS’ commitment to sports development and cultural heritage preservation.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, described traditional wrestling as more than just a sport, emphasizing its role in economic empowerment and youth development. He noted that the tournament provides young athletes with a platform to showcase their talent, gain international recognition, and explore career opportunities beyond their home countries.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre, Ambassador Francis Chuks Njoaguani, hailed the inclusion of female wrestlers as a groundbreaking achievement for gender equality in sports. Representing the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, Njoaguani highlighted that this move sets a new benchmark for inclusivity in West African sports.

With thousands of spectators in attendance, the tournament is expected to not only celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage but also inspire future generations of wrestlers. The presence of top traditional wrestlers across West Africa has heightened anticipation for thrilling matches that will showcase skill, strength, and resilience.

As the competition progresses, the participation of female athletes signals a broader shift in the sporting landscape of West Africa.
