Blackout as National Grid fails for second time in 2025

Millions of Nigerians on Friday, were left without electricity after the national grid collapsed for the second time this year.
The outage, which occurred around 4:00pm, was confirmed by two major electricity distribution companies, Ikeja Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company.
Ikeja Electric explained on social media: “We experienced a system outage at 2:00pm today, affecting supply in our area. We are working with key partners to restore power as soon as possible.”
Eko DisCo, on the other hand, linked the blackout to a reduction in power allocation from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), adding that the situation had forced them to implement load shedding across their network. They reassured customers that efforts were underway to resolve the issue quickly.
This latest power failure has raised further concerns about the country’s struggling electricity infrastructure, with growing calls for urgent reforms in the sector.
The blackout also comes at a time when discussions are ongoing about a potential rise in electricity tariffs and efforts by the government to stabilise the power supply across the nation.
