FCT youths, women seek cheaper election forms
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) natives, under the aegis of the Abuja Original Inhabitants Youths and Empowerment Organisation (AOIYEO), have passionately appealed to all political parties intending to participate in the 2026 Area Council elections to offer a 50% discount on nomination forms for FCT youths and women.
This appeal, made public by the President of the organisation, Commandant David Isaac, is aimed at encouraging greater participation of young people and women in the electoral process, and enhancing their representation in leadership positions within the Area Councils.
Isaac underscored the urgent need for inclusive governance, stating that the exorbitant cost of nomination forms often serves as a major obstacle for young aspirants and women, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
“This situation disproportionately hinders the participation of youths and women and limits the diversity of leadership within the Area Councils,” he said.
“Youths and women represent a significant demographic in the FCT. Their voices, ideas, and aspirations must be reflected in the governance of our communities,” Isaac added.
He stressed that by offering a substantial reduction in the cost of nomination forms, political parties can show a genuine commitment to inclusive politics and empower a new generation of leaders.
Isaac further warned that the current economic realities could disadvantage credible candidates, as the high cost of obtaining nomination forms may discourage well-meaning individuals from contesting. “This paves the way for wealthy aspirants who often prioritise recouping their investment, rather than serving the people,” he noted.
“We believe that the fight against corruption in governance should begin with making elections affordable. If the cost of contesting is reduced, the influence of political godfathers will decline, and the temptation to engage in corrupt practices will lessen,” he asserted.
AOIYEO emphasised that increased youth and female participation is key to tackling major issues in the Area Councils such as unemployment, infrastructure deficits, and social injustice. “Young people bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that are vital for meaningful change,” the group noted.
This appeal comes ahead of the Area Council elections slated for next year. AOIYEO expressed optimism that any political party willing to adopt this proposal would enjoy overwhelming support from the vibrant youth population of the FCT.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy for affordable political participation. Isaac disclosed that a dedicated committee has been set up to monitor political parties’ responses to this proposal.
“This will serve as a benchmark for assessing the commitment of political parties to inclusive and representative governance in the FCT,” he concluded.
