Lagos Assembly Appoints New Speaker Amid Financial Scandal
In a decisive move, the Lagos State House of Assembly has removed Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, citing allegations of financial misconduct and statutory violations. The assembly’s leadership transition follows mounting concerns over Obasa’s handling of public funds.
Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker and representative of Apapa Constituency 1, has been appointed as the new Speaker. Known for her tenure as the Chief Whip of the House, Mrs Meranda takes on the role amid heightened scrutiny of the assembly’s operations.

The assembly also elected Mojeed Fatai as the new Deputy Speaker, signalling a broader reshuffle in its leadership structure.
Obasa’s impeachment comes in the wake of allegations that he spent N17 billion on the construction of a gate leading to the assembly complex, a claim that drew widespread criticism and calls for accountability.
The former Speaker has faced recurring controversies over his financial dealings during his tenure, with this latest allegation amplifying demands for transparency and reform within the legislative body.
Observers are watching closely as the new leadership under Mrs Meranda steps into the spotlight, with expectations high for a commitment to restoring public trust and ensuring prudent management of the state’s resources.
