FG Counters Sanusi’s Critique, Seeks Unified Support for Reforms

The Federal Government has responded to recent comments made by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, asserting that its economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration do not require the emir’s endorsement to succeed.

Sanusi, speaking at a public event in Lagos, acknowledged the necessity of the government’s policies but stated he would not advocate for them due to perceived antagonism. In a statement released by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government highlighted its commitment to bold economic decisions aimed at stabilising and transforming Nigeria’s economy.

“We find it amusing that a leader from an institution rooted in fairness and justice would admit to withholding the truth for personal reasons,” the statement noted.

The government defended its reforms, including the unification of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidies, describing them as essential steps towards sustainable growth. These measures, it argued, have begun yielding results such as increased investor confidence, enhanced foreign reserves, and improved fiscal sustainability. Projections from the World Bank and other respected institutions suggest that Nigeria’s GDP is on the rise.

The government expressed disappointment at Sanusi’s subtle criticism, especially given his background as an economist and past support for similar reforms. “His Highness has a unique responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms aimed at collective progress,” the statement added.

Calling for unity among Nigerians, the government urged leaders to focus on the greater good, emphasising that rebuilding the nation requires collaboration and sacrifice. The administration remains open to dialogue with stakeholders while remaining committed to prioritising the interests of all Nigerians.

“This is a critical time for our country,” the statement concluded. “What is needed is collaboration, not unnecessary distractions. Let history record this as a turning point where leaders and citizens alike chose to prioritise the nation’s destiny over personal gain.”

The Federal Government reaffirmed its mission to lead Nigeria towards economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity, calling on all stakeholders to rise above partisanship and contribute to the collective vision of a better Nigeria.
