Nigeria has garnered the support of seven nations and secured commitments from 20 others to establish the UNESCO Category II Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Speaking in Abuja after hosting a UNESCO delegation assessing Nigeria’s readiness, Idris expressed confidence in the country’s chances of obtaining final approval to host the institute at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

“Seven sister nations have endorsed our bid, and 20 others have indicated support. We are optimistic that the UNESCO Board will grant us the hosting rights at its next sitting,” Idris stated.

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s proactive steps since securing provisional hosting rights, including collaboration with NOUN and other stakeholders. He underscored the global significance of the MIL Institute, describing it as a platform to demonstrate Nigeria’s expertise and commitment to media literacy.

“With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval, all necessary funding has been secured, and we are working closely with the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to ensure the project’s success,” he affirmed.

Idris also addressed the global challenge of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, advocating for a unified international effort to combat these threats. He assured that Nigeria’s commitment to press freedom remains unwavering, stressing the balance between freedom of expression and responsibility.

“For democracy to thrive, press freedom is essential. However, freedom must coexist with responsibility, ensuring the rights of others are respected,” he added.

Mr. Nelson Papi Kolliesuah, Project Manager of Data-Pop Alliance, commended Nigeria’s preparations. He noted that the institute aligns with global aspirations, Nigeria’s educational framework, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The proposed institute aims to equip nations with tools to counter fake news and promote media literacy, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leader in global media education.
