Another market fire hits Kano, 50 shops destroyed
Several shops were gutted in an early morning fire on Friday at Kwalemar Fatima Simra Market in Dakata, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, just days after a mysterious blaze at Singer Market that burned for more than 48 hours.
Dauda Haruna, chairman of the market’s fire committee, confirmed that around 50 shops, mostly small-scale businesses engaged in peanut oil refining and plastic and rubber recycling, were destroyed as the fire continued to rage. He added that market officials immediately alerted the relevant agencies upon noticing the blaze.
“From what we saw initially, about 50 shops have already been gutted, and the fire is still burning. We are still waiting for the Kano State Fire Service to arrive. We did our best to call them and inform them of the situation. I can even hear their vehicles now,” Haruna said.
As of filing this report, the full extent of the damage could not be ascertained, and the Kano State Fire Service has yet to issue an official statement. Efforts to reach the agency’s spokesperson, Saminu Yusif, were unsuccessful.
