FMC Abuja rejects claims of negligence in treatment of snake bite victim
The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that anti-snake venom was unavailable during the treatment of late musician Ifunanya Lucy Nwangene, who died after a snake bite on January 31, 2026.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the hospital clarified that Ms. Nwangene passed away from severe neurotoxic complications caused by the snake bite, despite prompt medical intervention. FMC Abuja described her death as tragic and expressed condolences to her family.
The statement, signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, explains that the medical team responded immediately upon the patient’s arrival, providing emergency care that included resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen and administration of polyvalent anti-snake venom.
“Anti-snake venom was administered, and all standard emergency protocols were followed,” the statement said.
It adds that Ms. Nwangene had already developed severe neurotoxic effects from the bite, and although plans were made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), her condition deteriorated suddenly before the transfer could take place.
“Despite intensive resuscitation efforts, including CPR, the medical team was unable to revive her. FMC Abuja strongly rejects allegations of negligence or inadequate response, describing such claims as “unfounded and misleading.”
The hospital reiterated its commitment to quality care, transparency, and patient safety, urging the public to rely on verified sources of information rather than unconfirmed social media reports.
The clarification comes amid heightened public concern and debate over access to life-saving drugs and emergency healthcare response following the young musician’s death.
FMC Abuja says it remains open to further inquiries and engagement as it continues to uphold professional medical standards.
