CAF reaffirms confidence in Morocco to host AFCON 2025 despite protests

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr Patrice Motsepe, has expressed strong confidence that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will take place as scheduled in Morocco, despite the ongoing anti-government protests in the country.

For over a week, young Moroccans have held daily demonstrations demanding an end to corruption and calling for major government reforms. The protesters have also sought improvements in social services, particularly in the health and education sectors, while voicing concerns over rising social inequality.

Morocco is expected to host the AFCON from December 21 to January 18, with matches across nine venues involving 24 national teams competing for Africa’s top football prize.

Speaking at a CAF meeting in Kinshasa, Dr Motsepe reaffirmed CAF’s commitment to Morocco, stressing that the tournament will go on as planned and that no alternative host nation is being considered.
