FG removes Mathematics as compulsory subject for Arts Students seeking University admission

The Federal Government has officially removed Mathematics as a compulsory subject for students applying to study art-related courses in Nigerian universities.

Under the new policy, applicants for programmes such as Fine Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, and Languages can now qualify for admission without Mathematics. However, English Language and other relevant art subjects will remain mandatory. Mathematics will still be required for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses.

According to a statement by the Federal Ministry of Education, the decision is part of ongoing efforts to expand access to higher education and support students whose strengths lie in the arts, thereby promoting inclusivity and creativity in the education system.

The reform is projected to create up to 300,000 additional admission slots each year, reduce the number of out-of-school youths, and strengthen vocational and technical education across the country.

JAMB and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have been directed to update their admission guidelines accordingly, while secondary schools and guidance counsellors are expected to align their subject advisories with the new policy.
