Ogun raises alarm as gender-based violence cases hit 502 in 2025
The Ogun State Government has expressed concern over the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) after the state recorded 502 incidents in 2025, according to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Adijat Oladipo.
Speaking at an event marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the commissioner said the figure reflects reports gathered from the ministry, security agencies, shelters, and civil society organisations across the state.
Oladipo noted that while the government has intensified awareness campaigns, the increasing number of cases shows that more survivors are finding the courage to speak out and seek help. She described the trend as “worrying but also encouraging,” adding that silence had previously prevented many victims from reporting abuse.
She stressed that the state would continue to strengthen its response mechanisms, including prompt prosecution of offenders, improved support services for survivors, and expansion of safe spaces for women and children.
The commissioner also called on communities, religious leaders, and families to play active roles in curbing the menace.
“We must all stand together. Gender-based violence is not a private matter; it is a crime,” she said.
The state government pledged to intensify preventive measures as part of efforts to reduce GBV cases in the coming year.
