President Tinubu celebrates former President Obasanjo on his 88th birthday
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, praising him as a key statesman, global peace ambassador, and a problem-solver.
In a heartfelt message signed by President Tinubu, he highlighted Obasanjo’s continued influence on Nigeria’s development, acknowledging the former president’s regular involvement in national matters and his efforts in shaping public policies and providing a check on leadership.
The message entitled, “Birthday Message by President Bola Tinubu to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on His 88th Birthday”, reads, “Today, as former President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo marks his 88th birthday, I pay tribute to an exceptional leader whose impact on Nigeria has been immense. His life, spanning over six decades, has been deeply intertwined with Nigeria’s history.
“General Obasanjo has consistently found himself at the centre of critical moments in Nigeria’s story. He served the nation honourably in the Nigerian Army, and as a Colonel, he was part of the historic moment when he received the surrender from the Biafran Army, bringing an end to Nigeria’s 30-month civil war.
“In 1976, following the death of General Murtala Mohammed, Obasanjo took on the role of military leader, completing the administration’s transition plan and handing over power to a civilian government in 1979.
“Two decades later, in 1999, after being released from prison, Obasanjo returned as a civilian president, ushering in a new era of democracy. Today, Nigeria’s democracy has been thriving for 25 years, thanks to his leadership.
“Throughout both his military and civilian leadership, Obasanjo introduced important policies and reforms that had a significant effect on the lives of many Nigerians. His dedication to national unity, peace, and progress remained evident at all times.
“Even after leaving office, few can deny that the former president remains a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and is highly respected internationally, where he is known for his efforts in promoting global peace and resolving conflicts. His work with organisations such as the African Union and the United Nations has demonstrated his strong commitment to Pan-Africanism.”
According to him, Though sometimes controversial, Obasanjo’s frequent involvement in national affairs has played an important role in shaping policies and ensuring accountability in leadership. He added that, I thank General Obasanjo for his invaluable contributions to Nigeria and praise him for his leadership and statesmanship.
He said, “At 88, Obasanjo continues to inspire. I pray that God grants him more strength and years, so Nigeria and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to this great patriot. Happy 88th Birthday, President Obasanjo!”
