Autism Awareness Day: First lady calls for greater support, Inclusion
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on citizens to show increased care and support for individuals living with autism.
In her message marking World Autism Awareness Day 2025, she highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” stressing the need for greater awareness and inclusivity.
“On this special occasion, I stand with millions across the globe to acknowledge and appreciate the unique abilities of individuals on the autism spectrum. Recognising their potential is essential for fostering a society that values diversity,” she stated.
She condemned the discrimination often faced by people with autism and emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for them to thrive.
“Neurodiversity reflects the richness of human uniqueness. While people process information differently, individuals with autism frequently encounter challenges in accessing quality education, healthcare, and employment. It is crucial to promote inclusion and equal opportunities for all,” she noted.
The First Lady urged Nigerians to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 8, which focus on quality education and decent work for everyone.
“Let us work together to build an inclusive society where individuals with autism are empowered to reach their full potential. By advocating for their rights and fostering acceptance, we create a better future for all. Happy Autism Awareness Day!” she concluded.
