Court orders ex-Acting Accountant-General Nwabuoku to open defence in N1.96bn Money laundering case
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Anamekwe Nwabuoku, must enter his defence in the N1.96 billion money laundering case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice James Omotosho gave the ruling on Thursday, dismissing Nwabuoku’s no-case submission in which he asked the court to discharge him of all allegations.
The judge held that the EFCC had tendered sufficient evidence, including documents and testimonies from nine witnesses, to establish a prima facie case that requires the former AGF to respond.
Justice Omotosho stated that the prosecution “has shown adequate grounds for the defendant to open his defence or present a rebuttal,” adding that the ruling does not imply guilt but gives Nwabuoku the chance to answer the charges.
The court further noted that Nwabuoku must explain his connection to the funds he is accused of receiving and address the evidence already placed before the court, stressing that the constitution guarantees his right to defence.
After the defence team requested additional time to prepare, the matter was adjourned to November 24 and 25 for continuation of trial.
