Super Eagles soar to 26th in latest FIFA World Ranking
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have climbed to 26th position in the latest FIFA World Ranking, marking a significant leap in global football standings.
The ranking, released on Monday by world football’s governing body, reflects a remarkable 12-place rise for Nigeria, alongside a points increase of 79.09.
The impressive surge follows the Super Eagles’ strong outing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where the team finished third after defeating Egypt in the playoff match last Saturday.
Nigeria’s campaign was widely applauded for its organisation, discipline and cohesion under head coach Eric Chelle. The Super Eagles lost just one of their seven matches at the tournament — a semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco, decided on penalties.
Despite narrowly missing out on a place in the final, the third-place finish provided a fitting reward for a team many observers described as one of the most balanced and competitive sides at the tournament.
At the top of the global ranking, familiar heavyweights maintained their dominance, with Spain, Argentina, France, England and Brazil occupying the top five positions. They were followed by Portugal, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium and Germany.
Within Africa, Morocco remain the continent’s highest-ranked side, followed by Senegal and Nigeria. Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tunisia, DR Congo and Mali complete Africa’s top ten.
Nigeria’s steady rise on the world stage has continued to draw attention, with the 2025 AFCON serving as a clear indicator of the Super Eagles’ growing strength. The team’s blend of youthful energy and international experience has reinforced its status as a major force in African football.
The Federal Government has also commended the Super Eagles for their performance, describing their AFCON campaign as a reflection of discipline, unity and resilience.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the team’s display resonated deeply with Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
“Football has its highs and lows, but your effort, commitment and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians everywhere,” Idris said.
“You reminded us that wearing the green and white represents courage, unity and perseverance. Hold your heads high, learn from this experience, stay united and return stronger.”
