Super Falcons seek redemption against Cameroon in Yaoundé
Nigeria’s Nigeria women’s national football team, popularly known as the Super Falcons, return to action in Yaoundé on Tuesday determined to respond strongly after a narrow 1–0 defeat to the Cameroon women’s national football team in the first of two international friendlies.
The reigning African champions were undone by a dramatic stoppage-time strike at the Military Stadium last Saturday, giving the Indomitable Lionesses early bragging rights in the build-up to this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Late Blow in First Encounter
Cameroon’s decisive moment came deep into added time when Yvana Mbomezomo unleashed a long-range effort that beat Nigeria’s debutant goalkeeper, Comfort Erhabor.
Erhabor had impressed throughout the encounter, commanding her area confidently and making crucial interventions before the late goal denied her a dream start in national colours.
Nigeria pressed for an equaliser in the second half, with Joy Omewa, Precious Christopher, Folashade Ijamilusi, Esther Onyenezide and Michelle Alozie introduced to inject urgency. However, Cameroon goalkeeper Ange Bawou stood firm, producing key saves to protect her side’s slender lead.
Tactical Tweaks Expected
Head coach Justin Madugu is expected to reshuffle his lineup for the rematch as the Falcons aim for greater cohesion and sharper finishing.
Chiamaka Nnadozie — widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers in recent years — could return in goal. In defence, Alozie may feature alongside Oluwatosin Demehin, Osinachi Ohale and Glory Ogbonna to reinforce the backline.
Midfield options remain rich, with Onyenezide, Christopher, Christy Ucheibe, Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene and Jennifer Echegini offering tactical flexibility.
In attack, captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Gift Monday, Rinsola Babajide, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Ijamilusi will be tasked with restoring Nigeria’s cutting edge.
More Than a Friendly
Though the clash carries no competitive points, the long-standing rivalry between Nigeria and Cameroon guarantees intensity. With WAFCON preparations entering a decisive phase, the Falcons will be eager to deliver a more clinical performance and reclaim momentum ahead of Africa’s biggest women’s football showpiece.
