TikTok Prepares for US Shutdown Amid Federal Ban Threat

Published

on

TikTok is preparing to shut down its app for users in the United States this Sunday unless the Supreme Court intervenes to block an impending federal ban, according to a report by The Information on Tuesday.

The situation arises from a law signed by President Joe Biden, which requires TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its US operations by 19 January 2025. If ByteDance fails to comply, TikTok faces a nationwide ban.

Interestingly, TikTok’s planned shutdown appears to go beyond what the law actually requires. The legislation mandates only the blocking of new downloads of the app from Apple and Google stores. Current users would still be permitted to use TikTok for a limited period. However, TikTok’s plan would prevent all access to the app, even for those who already have it installed.

If the shutdown occurs, users who attempt to open the app will reportedly see a message directing them to a website with further details about the ban. TikTok also plans to allow users to download their personal data to retain a record of their information.

In December, TikTok filed a court document estimating that around one-third of its 170 million US users would stop using the app if the ban lasted a month. The company, along with ByteDance, argued that the law contravenes the First Amendment, which protects free speech from government interference. They are seeking a delay to the law, claiming it infringes upon their constitutional rights.

Thus far, neither TikTok nor ByteDance has responded to requests for comment regarding the report, according to Reuters.

This potential ban underscores growing concerns in the US over data privacy and national security, with politicians from both major parties advocating stricter action against TikTok.

For now, millions of TikTok users in the US remain in a state of uncertainty, unsure whether they will lose access to the app this Sunday.
