The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

Obi announced his decision on Tuesday, December 31, in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, alongside other prominent political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone.

Addressing supporters and party stakeholders at the event, Obi said the move followed months of extensive consultations and engagements within the region and beyond. He explained that the decision was reached collectively in the interest of national unity and good governance.

According to him, the South-East leaders resolved to join the ADC in order to collaborate with other opposition figures across the country to form a strong political front capable of rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges.

“After months of consultations, we have taken this decision to join the African Democratic Congress and work with other opposition leaders nationwide to rescue Nigeria from the poor governance of the All Progressives Congress,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor noted that the ADC platform offers an opportunity to build a broad-based coalition focused on accountability, transparency and people-centred governance.

Political observers view Obi’s defection as a major development that could reshape opposition alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in the South-East, where he commands significant grassroots support.

With the move, attention is expected to shift to how the emerging ADC-led coalition will consolidate its structure and strategy in the coming months as political activities gradually intensify nationwide.
