Eid El Adha: NUJ urges reflection on Food Security, Insecurity, National Unity

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has extended warm Eid El Adha greetings to Nigerians, describing the season as a time for reflection, gratitude, and communal solidarity.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, on Thursday, the NUJ called on Muslims and citizens across the country to use the festive period to reflect soberly on the major issues confronting Nigeria, particularly the persistent insecurity and growing food crisis affecting communities nationwide.

The union commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its various developmental initiatives over the past two years aimed at strengthening democracy and improving the welfare of Nigerians. However, it stressed that critical challenges continue to threaten the country’s stability, especially the renewed activities of Boko Haram and rampant banditry in several parts of the country, which have disrupted humanitarian services and hindered development efforts.

The statement noted that the growing insecurity, coupled with the country’s ongoing power supply challenges, has severely affected agricultural productivity and worsened access to food, putting many vulnerable Nigerians at risk of hunger and hardship.

“As families and communities gather to celebrate, it is important to remember that adequate food supply is not just a basic human right but a foundation for peace and national stability,” the NUJ stated.

The journalists’ union urged the Federal Government to urgently reevaluate its strategies in handling these challenges and measure the effectiveness of its current policies. It called for actionable and lasting solutions to the nation’s multidimensional problems, emphasizing the need to protect the marginalized, empower farmers, improve food production, and strengthen security across communities.

The union also appealed to Nigerians to embrace compassion and unity during the Eid celebration by remembering those affected by insecurity and hunger.

“The Nigeria Union of Journalists remains committed to supporting programmes that amplify the voices of the underserved and encourage meaningful national conversations that will help achieve lasting peace and progress for the country,” the statement added.

It expressed hope for a safer, more united, and prosperous Nigeria where every citizen would have access to life’s basic needs.

“Happy Eid El Adha to all Nigerians,” the NUJ president concluded.
